To create, teach, and grow future leaders of tomorrow while solving the problems of today through impactful service. We focus on these key areas for our Service Projects: Our Families, Our School, Our Community, and Our World. The projects will help members learn to focus on the needs of others, that they can make a difference, and while also learning some new skills at the same time!
Cooking Up Character was originally founded in 2003 by Susan Riley Poteat for her children, as a character-building service project club, and many friends ages 6 and up joined them every month. She wanted to create a special club for them, where they and other kids could learn new skills (taught by subject matter experts) and apply those very skills immediately in impactful service projects helping community efforts (hospitals, firefighters, cancer patients, etc), nature (planting trees in parks, recycling, bird feeders, rain gauges, etc.), seniors (bingo, board games, singing Christmas carols) and much more.
Cooking Up Character clubs have been in homeschool groups, local elementary schools and YMCA after school programs and continues to grow (most recently a college chapter at UNC Chapel Hill.) Directing the energy of members into doing good in their community expands their hearts and minds and develops their leadership skills. We've partnered with many nonprofits to create service projects that allow our members to learn a new skill and apply it immediately in their service projects.
Our dedicated team of volunteers is committed to helping others. We adamantly believe in the service of others and the creation of future leaders for our community, nation, and the world while also solving the problems that face us today.
