March 2013: CUC has partnered with The Caring Community Fdn for our 1st Annual Heart Project!

The Caring Community Kids Giving Heart Project helps kids help other kids.

  • Kids draw/design art squares on fabric (we will have enough for 4-6 quilts) between our two CUC groups
  • Fabric art squares are made into quilts by volunteer quilters
  • Quilts are given to kids suffering with cancer

The quilt provides comfort and compassion to the children. Through these actions The Caring Community Foundation provides support and giving heart to these children and their families during a difficult time.  For more information on their program or to volunteer, please contact:

September 2012 Nature Service Project: Butterfly Garden

We have had a great response to our club and are now holding two clubs per month!

Project Details:
Rosemary O'day with Crowder District Park started by giving our Monday Service Project Leaders (our CUC members) an overview of a Butterfly lifecycle, their importance in our environment,
fun facts and discussed plants that attract them. Then we got to work
planting!  Linda Rudd, from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, gave the butterfly overview to our Tuesday club members. Thank you both for coming to present!

Rita Mercer, from the Native Plant Society, has graciously donated many of the plants we need for this project and also offered her consultative services on types of plants and placement in garden. Please visit her website to learn more about Rita and her amazing garden in Apex at Thank you Rita!
Big thanks also to Ann & John Sykes & Jo Sharpel for helping to determine the best location for our Penny Road Butterfly Garden. Ann, many thanks for all the additional information you provided us on Penny Road grounds and activities. We appreciate all that you did to make this garden possible! A special thanks to my FIL, Barry, for lending us his tiller and my amazing husband, Michael, for working in the heat to till and prepare the ground for planting.
Update: We successfully planted two butterfly gardens! Our Tuesday group planted on their own due to heavy rains on 9/18.  Pictures below:
